Meerkat

Meerkats are actually part of the mongoose family, and if any were to escape and formed a breeding colony, they would be a serious threat to our fragile ecosystem. Therefore all meerkats in the Honolulu Zoo are males.

Get to Know the meerkats

Native to southern Africa, meerkats are small members of the mongoose family known for their upright stance and social behavior.

At the Honolulu Zoo, all meerkats are males to protect Hawai‘i’s fragile ecosystem. They feed mainly on insects and small animals, live in tight-knit groups, and can live up to 12 years in captivity.

Curious, alert, and full of character, they’re a visitor favorite and a reminder of the Zoo’s commitment to conservation and education.
